Simulation of Relativistic Force-free Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence

چکیده
We present numerical studies of 3-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in a strongly magnetized medium in the extremely relativistic limit, in which the inertia of the charge carriers can be neglected. We have focused on strong Alfvenic turbulence in the limit. We have found the following results. First, the energy spectrum is consistent with a Kolmogorov spectrum: E(k) ∼ k. Second, turbulence shows a Goldreich-Sridhar type anisotropy: k‖ ∝ k 2/3 ⊥ , where k‖ and k⊥ are wavenumbers along and perpendicular to the local mean magnetic field directions, respectively. These scalings are in agreement with earlier theoretical predictions by Thompson & Blaes. Subject headings: MHD — turbulence — relativity

Imbalanced Relativistic Force-free Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence
When magnetic energy density is much larger than that of matter, as in pulsar/black hole magnetospheres, the medium becomes force-free and we need relativity to describe it. As in non-relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), Alfvénic MHD turbulence in the relativistic limit can be described by interactions of counter-traveling wave packets. In this paper we numerically study strong imbalanced M...

In paper I, we showed that time-dependent general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) numerical models of accretion disks, although being highly turbulent, have surprisingly simple electromagnetic properties. In particular, the toroidal current density in the disk takes the form dIφ/dr ∝ r . Guided by this simplicity, we use a time-dependent general relativistic force-free electrodynamics ...

متن کاملCompressible Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence in Magnetically-dominated Plasmas and Implications for a New Regime
In this Letter, we report compressible mode effects on relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (RMHD) turbulence in Poynting-dominated plasmas using 3-dimensional numerical simulations. We decomposed fluctuations in the turbulence into 3 MHD modes (fast, slow, and Alfvén) following the procedure mode decomposition in (Cho & Lazarian 2002), and analyzed their energy spectra and structure functions sepa...
متن کاملRelativistic Force-Free Electrodynamic Simulations of Neutron Star Magnetospheres
The luminosity and structure of neutron star magnetospheres are crucial to our understanding of pulsar and plerion emission. A solution found using the force-free approximation would be an interesting standard with which any model with more physics could be compared. Prior quasi-analytic force-free solutions may not be stable, while prior time-dependent magnetohydrodynamic models used unphysica...
